National Seminar at LUMSA University: The Growing Dimension of Hydro-Diplomacy in the 21st Century

The second event dedicated to UniLUMSA students opened with the aim of deepening the hydro-strategic dynamics and bringing the case studies analyzed by AB AQUA to the University.

AB AQUA returns to meet students and professors of LUMSA University with the second session of its seminar. The event took place on March 14, 2022 in the classrooms of the University, where the meeting focused on "The growing dimension of hydro-diplomacy in the 21st Century". The speakers of the meeting were Dr. Filippo Verre and Dr. Roberto Natali in their role as Founders and Scientific Directors for AB AQUA.

During this session, the emphasis was placed on the strategic aspects related to blue gold. There was no shortage of practical case studies to confirm how the role of hydro-diplomacy is already central in many international contexts.

The seminar opened with an in-depth analysis of the socio-economic development of the large Amazon River basin and the legal nature of trans-boundary rivers, and then continued with further reflections on the geo-strategic aspects of the management of canals and maritime straits.

Ample space was also given to further international insights, including the case of Turkish hydro-diplomacy, Taiwan's hydro-diplomatic strategies, the role of the Sinohydro Corporation in China up to the Italian hydro-strategic scenarios. The common denominator of the case studies presented was the real influence that the management of water resources generates on the geographical, social, economic, political and environmental reality of the various territories.

The meeting ended with a spirit of mutual gratitude, confirming AB AQUA’s desire to give voice to its mission in raising public awareness and national politics on the crucial role that water will play in many sectors over the next few decades. The university world, and schools in general, represent the ideal terrain for raising greater awareness on the topic, creating new reservoirs of ideas and strengthening strategic thinking on water resources.
