On May 20, 2023, Dr. Filippo Verre, Co-Founder and Chairman of AB AQUA, was interviewed by Dr. Simona Sassetti about his participation as a speaker at an International Conference at the United Nations, where he discussed the importance of adopting sustainable solutions in water production.

During his presentation, Dr. Verre highlighted how the growing demand for water, especially in arid regions, requires innovative and sustainable solutions. “Desalination technologies are becoming one of the main answers to water scarcity in many countries,” he said, “but it is essential that these technologies are powered by renewable energy sources and not by fossil fuels, as is currently the case in many Middle Eastern countries.”

Dr. Verre explained how countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, leaders in water desalination, have historically relied on fossil fuels to power their plants. However, this practice has a major environmental impact due to high CO2 emissions. “We need to make a quantum leap,” he said, “and switch to using solar and wind energy to power these plants, reducing the carbon footprint and promoting long-term sustainability.”

During the conversation with Dr. Sassetti, Dr. Verre highlighted how adopting renewable sources would not only reduce the environmental impact of desalination, but could also lower the cost of producing water in the long run, making these technologies accessible to developing countries as well.
